Sweden is certainly different to that of the Alps. It is appealing to those who are after an all-round winter vacation in a distinct environment and culture. The landscape is beautiful and unspoiled and pistes are certainly uncrowded. There is also a good range of non-skiing activities, the atmosphere is indisputably friendly and the food in the Swedish resorts is delightful, especially if you enjoy venison and fish.
The myth of it being dark in Sweden must be corrected here; yes the days are very short in December and early January yet from early February the lifts are open from 9am to 4.30pm and by March it is light until 8.30pm. Most resorts have some floodlit pistes too.
